Port Blair, April 23: Every year, April 22 is celebrated as ‘Earth Day’ throughout the world. The celebration reminds us to protect the Mother Earth in every possible ways. The theme for this year celebration was ‘Invest in Our Planet’.

As part of celebration, the Port Blair Science Centre organized a ‘Nature Study Tour’ for the school students. Around 60 selected students from various schools in and around Port Blair were taken on a study tour to Organic Horticulture Farm at Sippighat & Marine Interpretation Centre, Wandoor, a place well known for its flora & fauna. During the tour, the students were made aware of sustainable agriculture practices that promote soil health, reduce chemical use, and promote biodiversity. They also learnt about the benefits of organic food and its impact on the environment. The Marine Interpretation Centre, Wandoor provided a unique opportunity for the students to learn about marine life and the importance of preserving the oceans.

After the tour, a ‘Smell the Nature’ competition was conducted. In the competition, Saksham Singh of St. Mary’s Sr. Sec. School, Bhatubasti, R Rajkumar of Ananda Marga Middle School, Junglighat and Manisha Bala of Govt. Sr. Sec. School, School Line stood First, Second & Third whereas Abhay Pratap Singh of VKV, Lamba Line was adjudged as consolation prize winner. The event was organized in association with the unit of Organic Horticulture Farm, Sippighat & Marine Interpretation Centre, Wandoor.
