Port Blair, June 28: The newly enacted laws-Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita 2023, and Bharatiya Sahkshya Adhiniyam 2023, will be enforced from July 1, 2024. To ensure its effective implementation, the Andaman & Nicobar Police have conducted awareness programs with the PRI members of South Andaman District.

A awareness program was held in the conference hall of MPOC Chatham under the chairmanship of Smti Varsha Sharma, IPS, DIGP (L&O)/PMF, A&N Police alongwith Smti Niharika Bhatt, IPS, SP (D) SA, Ms Shwetha K Sugathan, IPS, SP PMF and Shri Vikas Swami, IPS, SDPO (SA). During the meeting, the PRI members were informed about the introduction of Zero FIR, which can now be registered anywhere, irrespective of the location of the crime. Information regarding the occurrence of any offense can also be provided electronically. A free copy of the FIR is mandated to be provided to both victims of crime and accused individuals.

Harsher penalties for sexual offenses, particularly those against minors, include increased minimum sentences and enhanced punishments for repeat offenders. The definition of sexual harassment has been expanded to encompass a broader range of behaviors and situations, thereby ensuring more comprehensive protection. Greater focus is on transparency and videography of the scene of crime, faster trials and ease of taking witness statements through videography. Other notable changes include streamlined procedures aimed at transparency and improved measures for victim and witness protection, thereby ensuring a more robust and responsive legal framework.

The interaction session is expected to foster greater collaboration and mutual understanding between law enforcement agencies and PRIs, ultimately contributing to a safer society. The Andaman & Nicobar Police remain dedicated to strengthening the bond between the police and the community through continuous interaction and public engagement.
