Car Nicobar, June 28: Nicobar District Police has launched a comprehensive initiative to educate the public about the newly enacted criminal laws: the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita,2023, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita,2023, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023. These landmark legislations, which will come into effect on July 1,2024, replace the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively.      

Intensive training sessions have already been conducted for our police personnel. Now, to extend this awareness to the general public on a larger scale, we are initiating various outreach activities which include awareness sessions to public, villagers at respective community halls, members of Self Help Groups, shopkeeper association and youths to sensitize the basics of the new criminal laws at various places under Nicobar District. Additionally, awareness efforts included displaying banners at key locations such as bus stops, jetties, market areas, and offices, as well as distributing pamphlets.

On 28/06/2024, a special awareness session was held at the Community Hall in Perka. Sh. Sunny Gupta, IPS Superintendent of Police, Nicobar District, and Sh. Vijay Singh, DANIPS, SDPO (Car Nicobar), conducted an interactive session, highlighting various citizen-centric provisions of the new criminal laws. They also distributed pamphlets to the attendees from three villages.

Additionally, on 28/06/2024, an awareness program about the new criminal laws was organized at Vikash Nagar, Kamorta. Village captains and local residents were informed about the provisions that would benefit common citizens and complainants or victims.

On 27/06/2024, police personnel from PS Campbell Bay conducted an awareness program at the Community Hall, Kamal Basti, Campbell Bay. On 27/06/2024, police personnel from PS Nancowry arranged an awareness session on new criminal laws on the boat MV Barren. Villagers and government servants were educated about these laws.

Total 51 programs were conducted in different places under Nicobar District as on date. Our goal is to facilitate a seamless transition to the new legal regime and empower our residents with the knowledge they need to understand it effectively. Through interactive and informative initiatives, we aim to create a society where every individual understands and contributes to the enforcement of these laws.

Nicobar District Police invites all residents, community leaders, and stakeholders to actively participate in these awareness programs. By doing so, they can play a pivotal role in building a more informed and law-abiding society for the benefit of all.
