Port Blair, Jan 28: The Election Commission, Andaman & Nicobar Islands today announced that the general elections to Gram Panchayats, Panchayat Samitis, Zilla Parishads and the Port Blair Municipal Council will be held on 6th March 2022. The date of counting of votes has been decided as 8th March 2022.

In a notification issued, the Election Commission stated, “Last general elections to Gram Panchayats, Panchayat  Samitis, Zilla Parishads and  Port Blair Municipal Council in the Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands were  held in September, 2015. The duration of five years of these PRIS and Urban Local Body from the date appointed for their first meeting has already expired. Due to spread of pandemic of COVID-19 and other compelling reasons during 2020-21 general elections to these local bodies were postponed”.

Port Blair, Jan 28: During the recent visit of the Member of Parliament, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma to Shaheed Dweep and Swaraj Dweep, a large number of Islanders highlighted the issue of severe power crisis in these two Islands.

The Islanders of Shaheed Dweep and Swaraj Dweep informed the Member of Parliament that due to the gap between the demand and supply of power, these two Islands are witnessing several hour long power cuts.

Port Blair, Jan 28: Martyr's day is observed on January 30 throughout the country in memory of Gandhiji who was assassinated on this day in 1948.  In A&N Islands this day has an added significance as it was on this day in 1944, that the Japanese Imperial Army had executed 44 prominent citizens of the Islands and had buried them in a mass grave in Homfreyganj.

Port Blair, Jan 28: In a boost to India’s maritime security, the indigenous Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) MK III aircraft was formally inducted at INS Utkrosh by Lieutenant General Ajai Singh, AVSM, Commander-in-Chief, Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN). As the rotor blades of the versatile helicopter cut through air, the aircrafts were ceremonially welcomed into ANC with a traditional water cannon salute, in a sight worth seeing and admiring. The induction of the aircraft marks a continuing increase in the capabilities of the A&N command in the past two decades of its raising as India’s only joint theatre command.

Port Blair, Jan 28: The Andaman Mopla Service Organisation (AMSO) is all set to observe the Centenary Celebrations of Mopla history in the Islands with its grand 100th year observance starting from 6th March 2022. The year shall commemorate the 100 years of Mopla struggle, resilience, commitment, grit and determination for development of its people.
