Centre of Indian Trade Unions Observes its Foundation Day

Sri Vijaya Puram, May 31: Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) observed its Foundation Day by organizing various programmes throughout the country today (30.05.2026). It was on this day in 1970 that the CITU was formed in the country. In Andaman & Nicobar Islands, a meeting was organized at Hotel ACC Auditorium today (3.10.2026) afternoon. 

Inaugurating the programme, B. Chandrachoodan, General Secretary, CITU A & N State Committee said that the CITU State Committee was formed in A & N Islands in 1983. He briefly explained the movements conducted by the workers in the islands under the banner of CITU during the last 43 years.   He said that it is only the CITU which is working among the workers in A & N Islands. He called upon the workers to strengthen CITU so that more movements can be conducted on various pending demands. 

Addressing the programme, D. Ayyappan, Vice President, CITU State Committee traced the origin of trade union movement in the country since the early twentieth century. He said that ever since its formation on 30th May, 1970, CITU has been steadfastly growing.  He said that from Kashmir border to Indira Point in Great Nicobar Island, the southernmost part of the country, CITU workers are seen everywhere, a record no other trade union organization can claim. He said that due to the wrong policies of Modi government, sufferings of workers are increasing.  

R. Surendran Pillai, President, CITU State Committee, who presided over the programme, criticized the central government and A & N Administration for neglecting the demands of workers. SP Kalairajan, Secretary, CITU State Committee also addressed the programme. BC Bhattacharjee, Vice President and CITU Secretaries P. Sathyapal, M. Yugander and Anand Raj were also present in the programme. 

A large number of workers, despite heavy rain, attended the programme.  

At Diglipur in North Andaman, Sunil Bepari, President, CITU Diglipur Zonal Committee hoisted CITU flag in the CITU office premises in the morning today.  A meeting was also held to mark the CITU Foundation Day which was addressed among others by Sunil Bepari and Barun Biswas, Secretary, CITU Diglipur Zonal Committee.
