Sri Vijaya Puram, June 2: In a significant step towards preserving documentary heritage and enhancing public access to historical records, the Andaman & Nicobar Archives has successfully implemented a large-scale digitization initiative and launched its dedicated sub-chapter on the Abhilekh Patal portal.
As part of this initiative, the Department has digitized and uploaded 10,040 archival records comprising 605,101 pages in the portal as of May 31, 2026. This achievement marks a major milestone in safeguarding the historical records of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands while making them readily accessible to researchers and the general public.
To facilitate user-friendly access, the Department has organized the digital repository into thematic categories. The collection currently includes archival files dating back to 1926 and Government Notifications from 1953 onwards, offering valuable insights into the administrative, social, and historical evolution of the Islands.
The dedicated digital repository can be accessed through the Archives Department’s sub-chapter on the Abhilekh Patal portal at https://ansa.abhilekh-patal.in.
The initiative reflects the Administration’s commitment to preserving and promoting the rich documentary heritage of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands through modern digital technologies.
The Archives Department invites researchers, scholars, students, and interested members of the public to explore the repository and benefit from its extensive collection of historical records. The initiative is expected to significantly contribute to historical research, academic studies, and public understanding of the unique heritage of the Islands, while ensuring the long-term preservation of valuable archival resources for future generations.
