Sri Vijaya Puram, July 21: In view of the recent road traffic accidents, the Andaman & Nicobar Traffic Police has significantly intensified enforcement against drunken driving across Sri Vijaya Puram. The special enforcement drive has been launched with the objective of enhancing road safety, preventing driving under the influence of alcohol, curbing rash and negligent driving, and ensuring strict compliance with the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
During the current year, a total of 754 motorists have been booked for driving under the influence of alcohol. While 70 motorists were booked during May 2026, the number increased significantly to 168 motorists in June 2026, reflecting the intensified enforcement efforts undertaken by the Traffic Police. This increase is the result of strategically planned enforcement drives conducted at vulnerable road stretches, accident-prone locations, and during high-risk hours. of the 168 vehicles booked during June 2026, 119 were two-wheelers, 39 were four-wheelers, and 10 were auto-rickshaws.
Driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious offence under the Motor Vehicles Act. The offence is punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months, or with a fine of up to ₹10,000, or with both. In the case of a second or subsequent offence, the punishment may extend to two years’ imprisonment, or a fine of up to ₹15,000, or both.
Motorists found driving under the influence of alcohol will be prosecuted under the relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. Their driving licences will also be forwarded to the Licensing Authority for suspension in accordance with the provisions of law. In cases involving commercial vehicles, the matter will be reported to the Transport Department for taking appropriate action.
