Situation to Improve with 375 MT of Potatoes Expected to Arrive by Sept. 11
Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 6: The Directorate of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs has inspected the major vegetable markets of Sri Vijaya Puram, including Ratnam Market, Mohanpura Market and Haddo Market, in view of the recent non-availability of potato and the rise in its retail price.
The inspections revealed a temporary shortage. No stock was found with the major wholesalers or in cold storage. A cargo vessel carrying potato from Kolkata had to return mid-voyage due to engine failure, disrupting the regular island supply. A limited air-lifted quantity is being sold by a few retailers at about Rs.120 to Rs.140 per kg.
M.V. TCI Laxmi arrived at Sri Vijaya Puram on 04.09.2026 with approximately 140 bags (7 MT) of potato. M.V. APJ Karan 2, carrying about 368 MT of potato, is expected between 9-11 September 2026. Arrival and distribution of this consignment is expected to improve availability and help in stabilizing the retail price.
The retailers and wholesalers are cautioned that illegal hoarding of potato (essential commodity) for black-marketing and profiteering are punishable offences under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 and the Prevention of Black-marketing and Maintenance of Supplies of Essential Commodities Act, 1980. Such acts may attract seizure and confiscation of stock, suspension or cancellation of licence, prosecution and other strict actions. Strict action shall be taken against anyone found indulging in these practices.
The public is requested not to react towards panic buying. Market inspections are being continued. Complaints relating to overcharging, hoarding or non-availability may be lodged with the Directorate of CS & CA.
