BJP Requests to Declare Onam as State Holiday in the UT

Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug 14: The Bharatiya Janata Party, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, has formally requested the Administration to upgrade the upcoming festival of Onam from a Restricted Holiday to a State Holiday in the Union Territory.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary, Dr. T.K. Jijith Rekh, Chief Spokesperson of BJP A&N Islands, recalled that Onam was earlier declared a State Holiday by the then Hon’ble Lt. Governor Shri Vakkom Purushothaman, a move that was warmly welcomed by the people. He emphasised that the festival, which is celebrated on 5th September 2025, holds deep cultural significance not only for the Malayali community but is also embraced by people of various communities across the islands.

Dr. Jijith stated, “Restoring Onam as a State Holiday will be a gesture of respect towards cultural diversity and inclusivity, reflecting the true spirit of unity in our islands.”

The BJP has urged the Administration to take an early decision so that the people may celebrate this important festival in its true spirit.
