Field Day on “Sea Safety Practices and Applications” Organized at Car Nicobar

Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct. 15: ICAR–Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI), Sri Vijaya Puram, organized a Field Day onOctober 14, 2025, under “Sea Safety Practices and Applications” at Teetop Village, Car Nicobar, under the DST-funded project on Coastal Fisheries Information Hub. The programme aimed to create awareness and build capacity among fishers on essential sea safety measures to ensure secure and sustainable fishing operations in the islands.

During the event, practical demonstrations were conducted on the use of Global Positioning System (GPS), Distress Alert Transmitters (DAT), Marine Walkie Talkies, Life Jackets, and Life Buoys, enabling participants to understand their real-time applications during fishing trips, along with field trips in open sea conditions.

A total of 26 fishers from Teetop Village actively participated in the programme and interacted with the experts to clarify their doubts regarding safety procedures and communication protocols at sea.

The Field Day was coordinated by Dr. R. Kiruba Sankar, Mr. Vinay Raj, and Ms. Sonia, under the overall guidance of Dr. Jai Sunder, Director, ICAR–CIARI. The initiative reflects CIARI’s continuous efforts toward enhancing the safety and livelihood resilience of the island fishers through science-based interventions and community outreach.
