
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct. 28: The Marine Fisheries Census 2025 is being carried out across the country under the overall coordination of the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Government of India, to generate comprehensive data on the marine fisheries sector, including details on fisher folk population, fishing craft and gear, infrastructure facilities, and socio-economic conditions of marine fishing communities.
The census operation in the Union Territories, including the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, is being undertaken by the Fishery Survey of India (FSI).
In the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the Marine Fisheries Census 2025 is scheduled to be conducted from 3rd November to 18th December 2025 in close coordination with the Directorate of Fisheries, A&N Administration. Enumerators have been specially trained to collect accurate data from all marine fishing villages, landing centres, and individual fisher households across the islands. The data generated from this nationwide census will serve as a vital input for fisheries development planning, infrastructure creation, livelihood support, and sustainable resource management in the marine fisheries sector.
The inaugural function of the enumerators’ training programme for the Andaman & Nicobar Islands was held today, with Ms. Jagtap Kalyani Rajendra, Director of Fisheries, A&N Administration, gracing the occasion as chief guest and distributing the Tabs to the Field Level Coordinators (FLC) and releasing the Marine Fisheries Census 2025 Pamphlets.
Earlier, Dr. C. Babu, Fisheries Scientist welcomed the participants and Shri.Bala Nayak, Mechanical Marine Engineer delivered presidential address and Shri. Kastub Bargode, Senior Scientific Assistant delivered vote of Thanks. Later, Dr. C. Babu gave hands on training on the VyAS Bharath app developed for the enumerators. The Dy. Director of Fisheries, Nicobar District, Asst Director of Fisheries, South Andaman District and Fishery Officials, Sagar Mitras and Enumerators from the South Andaman District attended the training physically, while those from North & Middle Andaman and Nicobar Districts participated virtually. The Fishery Survey of India appeals to all fishers and stakeholders to extend their full cooperation to the enumerators during the Marine Fisheries Census 2025 to ensure the successful completion of this important national exercise.
