Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov. 19: In the run-up to the World Fisheries Day 2025 celebrations, the Department of Fisheries, A&N Administration, in collaboration with the Department of Education, successfully organized a series of engaging pre-events aimed at fostering awareness, participation, and knowledge among students and youth on the importance of fisheries and marine resources.
As part of the initiative, a Quiz Programme on “Wonder World of Fishes” and a Poster Making Competition on “Marine Biodiversity of A&N Islands” were held yesterday at Govt. Senior secondary School, Junglighat. These events drew enthusiastic participation from school students across the Islands, who showcased their curiosity, creativity, and understanding of the region’s rich and diverse marine ecosystem.
Continuing the academic spirit, an Essay Writing Competition on “Fisheries Potential of A&N Islands: Way Forward for Fisheries Economy Development” was conducted today for the students of the Zoology Department, JNRM College, Sri Vijaya Puram. The essays reflected insightful perspectives on sustainable fisheries development, tapping the vast potential of the archipelago, and exploring innovative pathways to strengthen the fisheries economy in alignment with national priorities.
The winners of these pre-events will be felicitated during the official World Fisheries Day programme scheduled on Nov. 21 at TGCE Auditorium. The official programme will feature several significant milestones in the fisheries sector of the Islands, including the launching of Commercial Open Sea Cage Culture, culmination of the 45-Day Seaweed Training Programme, release of a Seaweed Farming Documentary, and distribution of the World Fisheries Day Awards – 2025.
The event is expected to witness participation from fishers, fish farmers, fishermen associations, fisheries cooperatives, fish exporters, traders, and various stakeholders connected to the fisheries value chain. This year’s World Fisheries Day revolves around the national theme “India’s Blue Transformation – Strengthening Value Addition in Seafood Exports.” The A&N Administration’s initiatives echo the national vision by promoting sustainable fisheries, enhancing livelihood opportunities, and fostering marine stewardship among the younger generation.
With the successful conduct of these pre-events, the stage is set for a meaningful and impactful celebration of World Fisheries Day 2025, reinforcing the commitment to responsible fisheries and the long-term prosperity of the Islands’ marine community.
