
Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov. 20: The International Child Rights Day was celebrated today in the auditorium of Govt. Model Senior Secondary School, Sri Vijaya Puram. The event was organised by the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) under the District Administration, South Andaman, in collaboration with PANKH NGO, bringing together vibrant participation from students of five schools across the South Andaman District.
The programme was graced by the Deputy Commissioner (South Andaman), Shri Arjun Sharma, IAS, as the chief guest. The Chairperson and Members of the Child Welfare Committee also attended the function as esteemed guests, adding significance to the celebration.
The event commenced with the lighting of the traditional lamp, symbolising knowledge, hope and empowerment, followed by a warm welcome address delivered by the District Child Protection Officer, South Andaman. A compelling video presentation showcasing children who proactively participated in debate activities earlier this year was screened, setting an inspiring tone for the ceremony.
A student of Govt. Model Senior Secondary School, Master Shaurya Lall, shared his insightful views on child rights, duties and social responsibility, leaving a strong impression on the audience.
The chief guest, Shri Arjun Sharma, IAS, presented certificates of appreciation to students who actively participated in the debates held during October 2025. In his address, he congratulated all children on the occasion of International Child Rights Day and praised the exceptional talent of children in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. He urged that such talents must be nurtured and showcased through constructive and positive platforms. Highlighting a growing concern, he emphasised the need to protect children from the emerging threat of drug exposure, advising them to stay vigilant and refrain from such harmful influences.
Earlier this month, the DCPU organised a series of debates in five schools across the South Andaman District on themes such as Digital Awareness, Personal Safety and Roles & Duties of Children in Society. The sessions were led by resource persons from the District Child Protection Unit, Police Department, Swami Suddhananda Saraswati and members of PANKH NGO, contributing to meaningful dialogue and awareness among students.
In the Inter-school performances, Govt. Senior Secondary School, Mohanpura secured the First Prize, followed by Govt. Model Senior Secondary School in Second Place and Govt. Boys Senior Secondary School in Third Place, marking an enthusiastic display of creativity and awareness among students.
