Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov. 23: The Deputy Education Officer, Wimberlygunj under the Directorate of Education & Sports successfully organized the “North Bay Road Marathon–5.0” today. The event was open to all and featured a 10 km run for men and school boys and a 5 km run for women and girl students of the Wimberlygunj Educational Zone. The marathon route extended from Chunnabatta (Ram Mandir) to North Bay and back.
Around 450 participants enthusiastically took part in the event. The chief guest for the occasion, Ms. Chanchal Yadav, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, A & N Administration flagged off Marathon 5.0 in the presence of Shri Vikram Singh, Director (Education). This was followed by a Cycle Rally. SAI, Kolkata, also distributed free T-shirts to all participants. The cash prizes were sponsored by Canara Bank, Sri Vijaya Puram.
The prize distribution ceremony was graced by Shri Vinyak Azad, Principal-cum-Commissioner, Customs Preventive, West Bengal, Smti. Banita Devi Naorem, IRS, Principal-cum-Commissioner of Income Tax Kolkata. Along with Shri P Abdul Basheer, Pradhan, GP, Kanyapuram and Shri Venkat Ram Babu, Pradhan, GP, Wimberlygunj.
The Director (Education/Sports), in his address, urged the younger generation to embrace sports to lead a healthy and disciplined lifestyle. He highlighted that the Marathon is a monthly event and encouraged everyone to participate regularly and stay away from drug abuse. As a gesture of motivation, Smti. Banita Devi Naorem, IRS presented a cash prize to the youngest participant to inspire the younger generation.
The vote of thanks was given by Dr. Manoharan, Deputy Education Officer, Wimberlygunj.
