Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec. 16: The General Body meeting of the Rural Development Engineering Wing Employees Union was held at Port Blair recently. In his presidential address, D. Ayyappan, President of the Union briefly explained the anti-people and anti-working class policies being pursued by the BJP government at the centre ever since it came to power in 2014. Referring to the passage of four Labour Codes in Parliament during 2019 and 2020 and notifying it on 21st November, 2025, D. Ayyappan said that whatever rights and benefits enjoyed by the workers in the country since British era are being taken away by the Narendra Modi government. He further said that educated youth are being exploited by contractorising and outsourcing permanent nature of government job in Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Bishwajit Das, General Secretary of the Union presented a brief report on the functioning of the Union while Anubha Majhi, Treasurer presented the accounts. Members who attended the meeting actively participated in the discussion on various issues of daily rated employees. The meeting expressed concern over Modi government’s rejection of the scheme for regularization of DRMs submitted by the A & N Administration during December 2023. The scheme was prepared and submitted to the Govt. of India by A & N Administration on the basis of the order of the Division Bench of Calcutta High Court in the ASNVMS (CITU) case.
The meeting elected a new committee with D. Ayyappan as President and Arun Kumar and Balakrishna as General Secretary and Treasurer respectively.
