
Sri Vijaya Puram, May 28: The 2nd Late T. Mohan Rao Memorial Open Chess Tournament 2025 commenced this morning with great enthusiasm at the Andhra Association Hall, Sri Vijaya Puram. The prestigious event is organized by the Andaman Nicobar Chess Association (ANCA) as a tribute to the late T. Mohan Rao, a revered chess player and mentor who made significant contributions to the chess community in the islands.
The opening ceremony was graced by Shri Bishnu Pada Ray, Honourable Member of Parliament, who inaugurated the tournament by making the ceremonial first move on the top board. In his address, Shri Ray commended ANCA for their unwavering commitment in promoting & popularizing the game of chess. He also took time to watch the young players in action, showing a keen interest in their performance. Pledging his full support, the chief guest assured that he would back efforts to further promote chess across the islands.
A total of 154 players, ranging from 6 to 75 years old, are participating in the tournament with great enthusiasm. The event is being held in a classical format, with each player allotted 30 minutes, plus a 30-second increment from the first move. The competition will conclude on May 30, 2025, after three days of intense play.
