
Shaheed Dweep, Jan. 13: The weeklong Vivekananda Mela organized as part of World Youth Day 2026 celebration began with great enthusiasm and fervour yesterday at Shaheed Dweep, commemorating the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda and highlighting the role of youth in nation building.
The event was graced by the Chief Engineer, APWD, Sri Vijaya Puram, Shri Prejith Rekh as the chief guest. The programme was attended by the Pradhan, Gram Panchayat Shaheed Dweep, the Pramukh, Sri Vijaya Puram Panchayat Samiti, Prothrapur, PRI members, senior officers and officials of the A&N Administration, along with a large gathering of local residents and tourists.
The Vivekananda Mela showcased a vibrant display of developmental initiatives and public awareness activities. Stalls were set up by various Departments of the A&N Administration, highlighting their schemes, services and achievements for the benefit of the public. The mela also witnessed active participation from tourists.
A key highlight of the celebration was the cultural performances by school students, who presented patriotic songs, dances and skits inspired by the ideals of Swami Vivekananda, drawing wide appreciation from the audience.
On the occasion, the chief guest highlighted the significant developmental works carried out by the Andaman Public Works Department (APWD) in Shaheed Dweep, which have contributed to improved infrastructure and enhanced quality of life for the island’s residents. He emphasized the importance of youth participation in sustaining development and preserving the unique heritage of the islands.
The celebration concluded with a collective resolve to empower youth, promote inclusive development, and uphold the values of Swami Vivekananda for a progressive and vibrant society.
