AH&VS Conducts Training on Scientific Rearing & Management of Dairy Cattle at Ongi Tikrey

Hut Bay, Feb. 8: The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS), A&N Administration conducted a two-day training programme on “Scientific Rearing & Management of Dairy Cattle” at Ongi Tikery Shelters, Hut Bay Panchayat, for rural women residing in tsunami shelters, members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and cattle owners of the area.

The training focused on imparting practical knowledge of scientific dairy farming practices, including balanced feeding, hygiene, disease prevention, and good management techniques to achieve optimum milk production and animal health. Dr. R K Singh, Retired Joint Director of the Department, attended the programme and interacted extensively with the participants, sharing his vast experience and motivating them to adopt modern methods.

The sessions highlighted the latest technologies introduced by the Department to boost milk production in the islands, such as Artificial Insemination (AI) with Sex Sorted Semen, Embryo Transfer Technology in cows, induction of high-yielding bovine breeds from the mainland, and the critical importance of fodder production. Participants were encouraged to develop fodder plots using stem cuttings, and techniques like silage making, Azolla cultivation, and hydroponic fodder production were explained with their benefits for maintaining good animal health and achieving higher yields.

The programme received enthusiastic participation from rural women and cattle owners, who appreciated the practical guidance and expressed their commitment to implementing the learned techniques.
