Media Delegation from Mainland India visit ICAR–CIARI

Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb 11: A delegation of journalists representing prominent national and regional print and electronic media, visited the ICAR–Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR–CIARI), Garacharma, during 9–10 February 2026. The delegation included media representatives from Chennai (Tamil Nadu) and Raipur (Chhattisgarh). The visit was coordinated by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), intended to provide an in-depth and first-hand understanding of the research advancements and agricultural technologies developed to address the distinct agro-ecological conditions of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Dr. Jai Sunder, Director, ICAR–CIARI, briefed the overall activities and major achievements of the institute. A press meet was also organized during the visit, in which the Director and Heads of Divisions responded to questions from the media, providing detailed clarifications on research outcomes, technologies, and future initiatives.Journalists interacted extensively with scientists to understand ongoing research, livelihood-oriented technologies, youth engagement in agriculture, and efforts toward sustainable food and nutritional security. Discussions included conservation of local germplasm, efficient land use, development of disease-resistant crop varieties, and the islands’ dependence on the mainland for milk, meat, and vegetables. Scientists also elaborated on initiatives aimed at strengthening local production and enhancing self-reliance.

Earlier, on 9 February 2026, the media delegation visited the World Coconut Germplasm Centre (WCGC) at Sippighat, where Dr. Ajit Arun Waman, Senior Scientist, explained CIARI’s agro-eco-tourism initiatives and the conservation of coconut gene bank. The team also visited the Spice Processing Unit, Mangrove Viewpoint, Plantation-Based Organic Spice Garden, and the Nature Trail, which collectively showcased CIARI’s integrated approach to conservation, research, and sustainable livelihood development.

Shri Arun Kumar, Director, PM’s Communication Cell & PIB Chennai, and Shri Ramesh Jaibhaye, Deputy Director, PIB Raipur, appreciated ICAR–CIARI for the informative interactions and well-organized field visits that provided comprehensive insights into the Institute’s research and innovations. The visit was coordinated by Shri. D. Karunakaran, Nodal Officer, Communication, ICAR-CIARI, Sri Vijaya Puram.
