Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb 14: The Joint Action Forum Against Deemed University has called for a full-day Andaman Bandh on Monday, 16th February 2026 (Monday), across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The bandh has been announced to strongly oppose the proposed establishment of a “Deemed-to-be University” in the islands and the planned affiliation of existing island colleges under the proposed Deemed University.
The Joint Action Forum stated that the decision to create a deemed-to-be university and bring all island colleges under its affiliation has been taken without adequate consultation with key stakeholders, including students, parents, faculty members, and the general public.
The Forum has expressed serious concerns that the move will adversely affect the academic standards and recognition of degrees awarded to students and could lead to an increase in fees and financial burden on families in the future.
All shops, markets, commercial establishments, private offices, and educational institutions are requested to remain closed in solidarity with the bandh call. However, essential services including hospitals, emergency services, and utilities are expected to function without disruption.
The Joint Action Forum has appealed to all residents of the islands to extend their support and participate peacefully in the democratic protest. The Forum has also urged authorities to reconsider the proposal and initiate transparent discussions with all stakeholders before proceeding further.
The organizers have emphasized that the bandh will remain peaceful and non-violent, and cooperation from the public is requested to maintain law and order.
