New Delhi, March 19: In a significant development highlighting concerns over environmental sustainability and tribal rights, a delegation from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands met Rahul Gandhi, Hon’ble Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, to discuss pressing issues related to the proposed Great Nicobar Infrastructure (GNI) Project.
The delegation comprised members of the Tribal Council from Nicobar District along with TSG Bhasker, Chairman of the Campaign Committee of Andaman & Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee (ANTCC). Also present during the meeting was Dr. Vikrant Bhuria, National Chairman of the All India Adivasi Congress, who extended his support to the concerns raised.
During the interaction, the delegation expressed serious apprehensions about the potential adverse impact of the GNI Project on the fragile ecosystem of Great Nicobar Island and its indigenous tribal communities. They stressed that while development is essential, it must not come at the cost of ecological degradation or displacement and marginalization of tribal populations. The members strongly advocated for a balanced and sustainable approach that prioritizes environmental conservation and safeguards the traditional rights and livelihoods of the native communities.
Rahul Gandhi gave a patient and attentive hearing to the delegation, acknowledging the gravity of the issues presented. He appreciated the delegation’s efforts in bringing these critical matters to his attention and assured them that the concerns would be raised at appropriate forums.
The delegation also submitted a detailed representation letter outlining their objections and recommendations regarding the project. In response, Rahul Gandhi assured that necessary steps would be initiated to address the concerns in a constructive manner.
In a positive gesture, he further conveyed his intention to visit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the near future to directly engage with the people and better understand the ground realities, reinforcing his commitment to protecting both the environment and the rights of indigenous communities.
