
Sri Vijaya Puram, March 30: The Department of Fisheries, in association with the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council, conducted a comprehensive cleanliness drive at the Fish Landing Centre, Junglighat for ensuring public health, maintaining fish quality, and supporting sustainable fisheries.
The cleaning drives were carried out in two phases during February, 2026 and from March 26 to 28 with the active involvement of Departmental officials and fishermen community. During the drive, significant quantities of waste materials were removed from the site, including ghost nets, used and broken thermocol, and parts of damaged boats that had accumulated over time.
A total of 15 truckloads of waste were removed from the area during this extensive exercise, marking a major step toward environmental management and operational efficiency at the site.
As part of the initiative, awareness also created among local fishers on the importance of proper waste disposal practices and encouraged to refrain from discarding waste materials into the sea or surrounding areas. The awareness efforts emphasized the need to maintain cleanliness to protect marine ecosystems and ensure a safe and sustainable environment.
The Department of Fisheries reaffirmed its commitment to continuing such initiatives in collaboration with local bodies and stakeholders to promote cleanliness, environmental sustainability, and improved infrastructure at fisheries landing centres.
