Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 26: In a major boost to emergency medical evacuation from the Andaman Islands, Aeromed Air Ambulance, in collaboration with Air India Express, has made it possible for brain hemorrhage patients to be transferred from Port Blair to the mainland within just 72 hours of hospital admission — a dramatic improvement over existing airline procedures that can take more than a week.
Until recently, IndiGo allowed stretcher transfers for brain hemorrhage or other critical neurological patients only after more than a week of hospital admission, following multiple medical reviews and airline clearances. This delay often proved critical due to limited neurology and neurosurgery facilities in the islands.
To bridge this gap, Aeromed Air Ambulance, in partnership with Air India Express, has begun managing stretcher-equipped commercial flights with medical monitoring systems and an onboard doctor. This innovative model ensures timely, safe, and affordable patient transfers under continuous medical supervision.
In the past four days, Aeromed successfully shifted two brain hemorrhage patients from Port Blair to the mainland for advanced neuro care — both within 72 hours of hospital admission.
“Our goal is to ensure that patients in remote regions like the Andaman Islands can access tertiary medical facilities within the golden hour,” said Karthikeyan, Chief Commercial Officer, Aeromed Air Ambulance. “By coordinating clearances and operating stretcher-equipped Air India Express flights with onboard doctor support, we’ve made emergency evacuation faster, safer, and more affordable.”
Aeromed also maintains a fully functional office at 16, Bengali Club Complex, Port Blair, providing 24×7 coordination and medical logistics support. For emergency assistance, patients or hospitals can contact the Aeromed helpline at +91 97899 33438.
