
Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb. 3: The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, successfully concluded Animal Welfare Fortnight 2026, observed from 14th to 30th January, 2026, with a wide range of impactful activities that promoted kindness, compassion, and responsible care towards all animals while highlighting their vital role in agriculture, livelihoods, food security, and ecological harmony.
The fortnight commenced with enthusiastic inauguration ceremonies at Goshalas in Calicut and New Bimblitan, where cattle were honoured in traditional style, drawing active participation from PRI members, school children, animal lovers, and departmental officers. The highlight was the traditional Mattu Pongal celebration on 16th January at Livestock Farm Complex, Dollygunj, where cattle were bathed, horns painted, adorned with flowers and garlands, and offered special Pongal in gratitude for their contribution to rural life. A colourful Pet Walk on 17th January from Marina Park Gate to Flag Point saw hundreds of dog lovers and pets join in, with the Director advocating adoption over buying, support for ABC programme, and responsible feeding at designated stations; participants received Pet Care Kits.
Other key activities included multiple veterinary health camps providing free check-ups, anti-rabies vaccinations, deworming, and guidance; door-to-door camps at Manglutan and Rangachang; awareness sessions in schools (e.g., Govt Middle School, Kadamtala and Veterinary Dispensary Kadamtala) on animal kindness, plastic-free environment, exposure visits for school children to departmental farms, hatcheries, and institutions for hands-on learning in animal care and management.
The fortnight witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, pet owners, farmers, NGOs, PRI members, and the public, fostering greater empathy, awareness, and community responsibility towards animals. The Department extends sincere thanks to all participants, school authorities, local leaders, and animal lovers for making the fortnight a resounding success. These efforts strengthen the islands’ commitment to a humane, harmonious, and compassionate society for all living beings.
