
Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb. 6: The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS), Andaman & Nicobar Administration, hosted an exposure visit for trainee farmers from Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Sippighat, along with the Pig Unit of CIARI, on February 5, 2026, at the Government Pig Farm under Demonstration cum Training Centre Dairy Farm (DTCDF), Dollygunj, and the Govt Fodder Training cum Demonstration Farm, Livestock Farm Complex, Dollygunj.
The farmers were taken around the farm and shown day-to-day management activities, including feeding, housing, health care, and breeding practices for pigs. They were also briefed about the importance of balanced feed and fodder for livestock productivity. Special emphasis was given to modern fodder production techniques, with live demonstrations and explanations on hydroponics, Azolla cultivation, and methods for growing high-yielding Hybrid Napier and Super Napier grasses. The trainees showed keen interest in these sustainable practices, which can ensure year-round green fodder availability even in remote island conditions.
A total of about 25 farmers participated in the visit, led by Dr. Zachariah George from KVK Sippighat and Dr. Prakash Bala, Principal Scientist, CIARI. The exposure visit provided practical insights into scientific animal husbandry and fodder management, equipping participants with knowledge to improve their farming practices and livelihoods.
