AH&VS Organises Veterinary Health Camp at Chowra

Nancowrie, July 9: The Deptt. of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS), A&N Administration, organized a Veterinary Health Camp at Chowra Island on July 5, 2025, as part of its efforts to enhance livestock health and support to rural communities. The camp, conducted under the Department’s initiative to bring veterinary services to remote areas, included a door-to-door deworming campaign aimed at improving animal health and productivity. During the camp, 18 farmers benefited, with 67 pigs and piglets and 185 backyard poultry birds receiving treatment to address health concerns and promote better growth.

The Senior Veterinary Officer (SVO) met the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Tribal Council (CTC) and Headmen of Chowra Island to discuss community needs for animal husbandry development. Villagers expressed a strong demand for backyard poultry chicks and piglets, specifically requesting 5-week-old poultry chicks to ensure better survival and growth. These demands were promptly conveyed to the SVO of the Composite Livestock Farm (CLF), Kamorta, who assured the supply of 5-week-old Vanaraja birds by the following week and the next litter of piglets to Chowra Island. This commitment reflects the Department’s dedication to addressing the livestock needs of remote communities and promoting sustainable farming practices.

The Veterinary Health Camp on Chowra Island underscores the AH&VS Department’s commitment to enhancing animal husbandry activities in the A&N Islands. The Deptt. plans to continue organizing such camps to ensure remote Islands like Chowra have access to essential veterinary services and resources.
