
Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov. 4: The prestigious FIDE Chess World Cup 2025 has commenced at the luxurious Resort Rio in North Goa, India bringing together 206 of the world’s top chess players from nearly 80 countries. The event, being hosted in India after a gap of 23 years, will run until 26th November 2025 and features an intense knock-out format where every round is a must-win battle.
It’s also a proud moment for the islanders as B. Neelaiah, a FIDE Arbiter from the A & N Islands, is serving as an Assistant Arbiter at the prestigious FIDE World Cup 2025, marking a proud moment for the chess fraternity of the islands.
The championship carries immense significance, as the top three finishers will qualify for the 2026 Candidates Tournament, the final gateway to the World Chess Championship. The top 50 seeded players, including reigning World Champion D. Gukesh, will enter the competition directly from Round 2, which begins today.
