
Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 01: CITU has demanded construction of fish market and to provide allied facilities at Dignabad Fish Landing Centre for the benefit of a large number of fishermen including fish sellers and the general public. In a letter sent to the Director of Fisheries, A & N Islands, R. Surendran Pillai, President, CITU A & N State Committee stated that the Dignabad Fish Landing Centre at Sri Vijaya Puram has emerged as one of the important fish landing centres in the islands where a large number of fishermen including fish sellers are engaged in the fishing activities for the last several years.
CITU President said that these fishermen including fish sellers have not been provided with any basic facilities. He informed the Director of Fisheries that the fishermen are required to remain in the area for several hours in a day. Similarly, fish sellers, most of whom are women, are also facing difficulties in the absence of basic facilities like market, toilets, electric connection, drinking water, hygenic condition, etc.
CITU learnt that the Administration has allotted 500 sq.mtrs of land at Dignabad, Sri Vijaya Puram for construction of a fish market and attached facilities. However, the land remains unutilized while the fishermen are facing hardship. General Public also face difficulties in the absence of proper fish market at the above place.
