CPI (M) to Oppose Great Nicobar Island Project to Save the Island from Environmental Disaster

Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct. 7: The State Secretariat and State Organising Committee meetings of the CPI (M) was held on 4th October, 2025 (Saturday) at Shaheed Bhavan, Anarkali, Port Blair in presence of K. Balakrishnan, Ex-MLA of Tamil Nadu and CPI (M) Polit Bureau Member. The meetings reviewed the political situation prevailing in the islands.  The meeting of State Organising Committee decided to oppose the Great Nicobar Island Project, as the same will cause large scale cutting of trees, displacement of people including tribal, and adversely affecting the environment. A resolution on the issue was passed and it will be sent to the authorities concerned. The meeting was of the opinion that the Govt. of India/ A & N Administration did not consult the political parties or elected representatives of local bodies in the islands.  The Administration or Govt. of India do not come forward to reveal the entire aspects of the projects in Great Nicobar. 

CPI (M) State Organising Committee meeting further decided to intensify  the agitation  on various  issues like (i) failure of BJP government to complete the renovation work of  NH4 for the last 11 years (ii)  bad condition of  rural and urban roads (iii) continuous power cuts in the islands particularly at Port Blair/rural South Andaman (iv) drinking water scarcity in various parts of the UT (v) rising unemployment (vi)  unchecked price rise (vii) non-availability of  boats to outstations and island-mainland sector, etc.  

The State Organising Committee meeting expressed concern over the massive killings of Palestinians in Gaza by Israel with the support of USA and decided to organize various programmes against the killings of innocent people. 

CPI (M) meeting has urged the Election Commission of India to desist from conducting Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls on Bihar Model in Andaman & Nicobar Islands considering the peculiar geographical conditions of these islands. D. Ayyappan, Secretary, CPI (M) A & N State Organising Committee has already opposed the Bihar Model of SIR in the islands and had urged the Chief Electoral Officer, A & N Islands to convey the opposition of CPI (M) in this regard to the Election Commission of India. Dr Gouranga Majhi presided over the meetings. D. Ayyappan, Secretary presented the political and organizational reports in the meeting.
