
Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov. 21: As part of the visit of the National Commission for Women (NCW) delegation to the Islands, Smti. Vijaya Rahatkar, Hon’ble Chairperson, National Commission for Women, along with other dignitaries, visited ANE-Sagarika and appreciated the wide range of handcrafted local products showcased by artisans. She particularly admired the Geographical Indication (GI) tagged items that reflect the unique cultural heritage and craftsmanship of the region. The Hon’ble Chairperson also interacted warmly with the artisans, acknowledging their creativity, dedication, and resilience.
Later, Smti. Rahatkar graced an interactive program organized by the Department of Industries, Branch MSME, DFO and Coir Board, in association with allied Departments including Social Welfare and Rural Development. The event brought together Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and women beneficiaries under various Government schemes such as PMEGP, PMFME, Dulari, and PMMY, as well as entrepreneurs associated with the ANE-Sagarika Emporium. Participants exhibited a diverse collection of handmade crafts and innovative products that showcased their entrepreneurial spirit.
Commending the large participation of women in spite of the geographical challenges faced in these Islands, the NCW Chairperson lauded their determination and commitment to self-reliance. She reaffirmed NCW’s continued support to empower women through targeted programs on financial literacy, branding, packaging, and business development.
During the program, Shri Atul Soni, Director of Industries, elaborated on various women-oriented schemes implemented by Industries Department and their positive outcomes, while Shri G.K. Sinha, IEDS, MSME, highlighted the key benefits of flagship MSME initiatives. Several women beneficiaries also shared their inspiring journey of success and growth under these schemes. The program concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by the Coir Board Incharge.
The visit of Smti. Vijaya Rahatkar and the NCW delegation marked a significant step toward inspiring women entrepreneurs of the Islands. Their encouragement and commitment reinforced the vision of inclusive growth, empowering local artisans to build sustainable livelihoods while preserving the Islands’ cultural and traditional craftsmanship for future generations.
