DEO Organises Torch Relay Across Schools of Sri Vijaya Puram and South Andaman to Pay Tribute to Major Dhyan Chand

Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug 22: The Deputy Education Office is proudly organizing a Torch Relay across the Sri Vijaya Puram schools of South Andaman Districts. This prestigious event aims to commemorate National Sports Day and pay tribute to the legendary hockey wizard, Major Dhyan Chand.

The Hon’ble Lt. Governor, A & N Islands formally launched the three torches during the commendation ceremony of the Independence Day Parade on 15th August 2025. Subsequently, the torches were flagged off by Ms. Chanchal Yadav, IAS, and Commissioner-cum-Secretary on 20th August 2025, at Netaji Stadium, marking the simultaneous commencement of the Torch Relay in all three districts.

A large number of students, teachers, parents, PRI members, and members of the general public are enthusiastically participating in the Torch Relay across all three districts. The relay will traverse every corner of the islands, culminating on 29th August 2025, at Netaji Stadium, in a grand finale that promises to be an unforgettable experience.

As part of the National Sports Day celebrations, various inter-school tournaments are being conducted. Today, the final matches of the Table Tennis Tournament were played in Sri Vijaya Puram of South Andaman. The results: NCS defeated Sagaritara School in the U-17 Boys’ Doubles event with scores of 11-7, 11-5, and 11-0. In the U-17 Girls’ Doubles event, GDMS (SS) emerged victorious, defeating GSSS Girls with scores of 11-5, 8-11, 10-12, and 11-9. In the U-14 Boys’ Doubles event, NCS defeated Sagaritara with scores of 11-5, 11-5, and 11-6. Meanwhile, in the U-14 Girls’ Doubles event, KV-I triumphed over NCS with scores of 12-10, 5-11, 11-3, 11-6, and 11-6.
