Department of Agriculture Observes World Soil Day in Car Nicobar

Car Nicobar, Dec. 10: The Department of Agriculture, Car Nicobar organized World Soil Day on Dec. 5 at Malacca Village, Car Nicobar. Shri Micah, 1st Headman, who was the chief guest urged the farmers to improve the soil health by making use of the waste available in their farm and garden and requested to adhere to the recommendations as provided in the Soil Health Card. On the occasion, Soil Health Cards were distributed to farmers.

Earlier, Shri C Vinod Kumar, Assistant Director (Soil) welcomed the gathering and provided an overview of the significance of World Soil Day, on the theme ‘Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities’ regarding the essential role of soil in sustaining food, water, climate resilience and health.

Dr Santosh Kumar, Sr. Scientist & Head, KVK-CIARI and Dr. Ajmal, Subject Matter Specialist, KVK-CIARI, Car Nicobar also spoke on the occasion. Smti. R. Bhu Bharthy, Agriculture Officer discussed the various methods to enhance soil health through composting and the management of organic waste.

Meanwhile, the World Soil Day 2025 with the theme “Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities” was also celebrated at community Hall, Rajiv Nagar, Campbell Bay on Dec. 5. The programme was inaugurated by Shri. Barnabas, Chairman Tribal Council, Great Nicobar and in the programme the farming community was sensitizing about adopting sustainable soil management practices to safeguard agricultural productivity and ecological balance in achieving sustainable development goals.

Shri. Sitaram, Junior Agriculture Assistant elaborated on critical issues of soil pollution and management. Smti. Yasmeen, Veterinary Compounder, AH & VS spoke on the importance of World Soil Day.    Soil Health card were distributed among the farmers.
