Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb. 15: The first Island Bird Festival was formally inaugurated yesterday at Symphony Samudra Resort at Chidiyatapu, marking a significant milestone in promoting biodiversity awareness and eco-tourism in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by the Chief Secretary, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Dr. Chandra Bhushan Kumar, IAS who attended as the chief guest. The event also saw the presence of the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, A&N Islands, Shri. Sanjay Kumar Sinha, IFS, along with senior officials from the A&N Forest Department and other line Departments.
In his address, the Chief Secretary highlighted the ecological importance of the islands, which are home to a rich diversity of endemic and migratory bird species. He emphasized the role of such festivals in fostering conservation awareness, encouraging responsible tourism, and engaging local communities in protecting natural heritage.
The four-day bird festival will feature bird watching trails, expert talks, photography sessions, and interactive programs aimed at educating participants about avian diversity and conservation. 31 participants from mainland India, along with 7 local islanders, are taking part, creating a platform for knowledge exchange and community participation.
Officials from the Forest Department noted that the festival is expected to strengthen conservation efforts while also providing sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities. The event reflects the Administration’s commitment to balancing environmental protection with nature-based tourism.
The First Island Bird Festival is poised to become an annual celebration, showcasing the unique avifauna of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and reinforcing the importance of preserving their fragile ecosystems.
