
Minicoy, Nov. 18: A Field Day on “Organic Cultivation of Brinjal under Coconut Plantations” was organised at the ICAR–Central Island Agricultural Research Institute Regional Station, Minicoy, on 1st November 2025 as part of the JanJatiya Gaurav Divas celebrations. The event aimed to promote sustainable and organic farming practices suitable for island and tribal communities.
A total of 15 participants, including farmers and farm women from Funhillol and Rammedu villages of Minicoy, attended the programme, where they were exposed to scientific brinjal cultivation practices demonstrated at the institute. Dr. Saneera E. K. Scientist In charge and Shri Shareefuddeen Hassan K. Technical officer delivered technical sessions on scientific methods of brinjal cultivation, focusing on organic nutrient management, eco-friendly pest control, and effective approaches for integrating brinjal within coconut-based cropping systems.
Field demonstrations highlighted the advantages of organic intercropping in enhancing soil fertility, improving resource-use efficiency, and generating additional income for island farmers. Participants also engaged in interactive discussions aimed at strengthening their understanding of sustainable agricultural practices. During the event, a total of 45 kg of fully matured brinjal was harvested.
The programme was coordinated by Dr. Saneera E. K., Convener; Shri Shareefuddeen Hassan K. and Shri Arif M. I., Coordinators; and Dr. I. Jaisankar, Nodal Officer, Lakshadweep. The overall event was conducted under the chairmanship of Dr. Jai Sunder, Director, ICAR–CIARI, Port Blair.
