ICAR-CIARI, AHVS and KVK Jointly Organise Training on Scientific Pig Farming for Rural Livelihoods and Food Security at N&M Andaman

Rangat, Dec. 8: A battery of training programmes was organized by ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Port Blair at North and Middle Andamanfrom2nd Dec. 2025 to 4th Dec. 2025in collaboration with Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, A&N Administration and ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kenda, Nimbudera. The theme of the trainings was “Scientific Pig Farming for Rural Livelihoods and Food Security in A & N Islands”. The first training was conducted at Samithi Bhavan of Rangat Tehsil of Middle Andaman on 2nd Dec, 2025. The trainers were Dr. P.A. Bala, Principal Scientist and Dr. Arun Kumar De, Senior Scientist of Animal Science Division of ICAR-CIARI, along with Dr. Aleena Rajan, Veterinary Officer, Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services. There were 60 participants mainly youngsters from different parts of the district having different types of livestock and Pashu Sakhi from different parts of the North and Middle Andaman district.

Dr. Bala opulently explained the Nutritional management of livestock, while Dr. De elucidated scientific livestock rearing, housing, and general management, while Dr. Aleena Rajan distinctly explicated ways for a profitable livestock rearing and curbing the seasonal diseases in islands.

Second training was conducted at Nimbudera at farmers resident (Mr. Sudeep Mazumder) of N&M Andaman. There were more than 45 participants s in the programme. Dr. A.K. De, Sr. Scientist explained intricately pig and goat farming to increase the profit and improve the livelihood of the farmers. Dr.Manoj Kumar, (Subject Matter Specialist), graced the occasion and were instrumental in briefing the ways and means for profitable livestock rearing. Dr. Bala’s deliberation on Strategies to nurture livestock with local feed ingredients very useful and conferred ways of sustainable pigrearing, housing, and general management, before calling it a day.

The third and final day an awareness programme and training was conducted at ICAR-KVK, Nimbudera where 55 participants attended the training and 5 Pashu Sakhi also attended the programme. Dr. De intricately explained the pig rearing in an extensive system and put limelight on benefit of superior germplasms. Dr. Bala focused on approach to increase revenue by backyard poultry, then the day culminated with Dr. Manoj Kumar’s (SMS)deliberation on ways to use local resources and curbing the feed scarcity in islands to amplify profit in livestock farming. However, before concluding each training programme the farmers were distributed with inputs like feed supplements and dewormers after explaining them the healthful and sanative uses of the inputs. As urged by the participants and SMSs, likewise programmes would be conducted at N&M Andaman similarly for welfare of the farmers in near future.
