
Diglipur, Jan 8: ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI) successfully conducted, for the first time, an awareness programme on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in fisheries for freshwater fish farmers of Diglipur, North Andaman, on 3 January 2025. The programme was organized under the All India Network Project on Livestock and Fisheries (Fisheries Component). The programme was held under the chairmanship of Dr. Jai Sunder, Director (Acting), ICAR–CIARI. During the awareness session, the participants were sensitized to the responsible and judicious use of antibiotics in fish culture and disease management practices. Dr. J. Praveenraj, Scientist and Course Director, delivered a technical session, highlighting alternatives to antibiotics in aquaculture. The farmers were educated on the use of lime, potash, and other eco-friendly chemicals and therapeutics for the prevention and management of disease outbreaks in freshwater aquaculture systems. The programme witnessed the participation of 50 farmers, including women farmers. The event concluded with the administration of an oath on the responsible use of antibiotics, reinforcing the importance of sustainable and responsible aquaculture practices. The awareness programme received very positive feedback from the participants.
