Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 2: The ICAR–Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI), Andaman and Nicobar Islands, in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), South Andaman, organized a Field Day on Shrimp Culture in Biofloc System at the Marine Research Laboratory, ICAR-CIARI.The program was coordinated by Dr. Chittaranjan Raul, Dr. Y. Ramakrishnan, Dr. R. Kiruba Sankar, and Dr. J. Praveen Raj, under the overall guidance of Dr. Eaknath B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI.
The event showcased the advantages of biofloc technology (BFT) in sustainable shrimp culture, emphasizing its potential to improve productivity, reduce water use, and promote eco-friendly aquaculture practices suited to the island ecosystem. A total of 26 farmers and stakeholders from Sri Vijaya Puram and Ferrargunj block participated, gaining hands-on exposure to culture techniques, water quality management, and feeding strategies under the system.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Eaknath B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI, highlighted the need to adopt innovative aquaculture technologies like biofloc culture to enhance livelihood opportunities and ensure sustainable resource utilization in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
