Port Blair, May 12: The Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman, Shri. Arjun Sharma, IAS along with engineering wing of APWD/PRIs and elected representatives conducted extensive exploration for augmentation of more water resources to meet the challenge of scarcity of water during summer seasons in South Andaman District.

The Deputy Commissioner explored various villages and issued directions to engineering wing to carry out the de-silting of Jinga Nallah at Mile Tilak.

Zumba Zin Pooja Biswas Conducts the First Ever ‘Zumba Party’ in the Islands

Port Blair, May 12: With an aim to empower the women in the islands by making them celebrate fitness, the first ever ‘Zumba Party’ in the Islands was celebrated on May 11, 2024 at Hotel Driftwood. The Zumba Party was conducted by Zumba Zin, Pooja Biswas who is the first internationally certified Zumba instructor from the A&N Islands. The Zumba Party was powered by Komal’s Fitness Centre, which is the first ladies’ fitness centre in the A&N Islands.

Port Blair, May 12: The A&N Police, in association with the Andaman Nicobar Chess Association (ANCA), is conducting the 1st DGP Cup A&N State Open Chess Tournament 2024. This prestigious event commenced on May 11th, 2024, at the Drill Hall, Armed Police Unit, Police Lines, marking a significant milestone for the chess community of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The event represents a significant initiative by the A&N Police to engage with the community and provide a platform for individuals to showcase their skills and passion for the game.

Port Blair, May 12: In response to the ongoing distress caused by frequent power outages in Ferrargunj Tehsil, a delegation of Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) members and civil society representatives met with Mrs. Nandini Paliwal, IAS, Commissioner cum Secretary of Power on 10th May 2024, to discuss the persistent issue.

The delegation, which included notable local leaders such as Miss V. K. Mariyam Bibi, Ex Adhyaksha & Zilla Parishad member from Bambooflat, Smti Padmavati, Pramukh, Panchayat Samity, Ferrargunj, Shri A. Ummer and Vasudevan Nair, ZP members from Wimberlygunj and Mannar Ghat respectively; and MK Abdul Gafoor, Executive Member of the Citizen Forum, highlighted the severity of the power cuts, noting that the locality faces blackouts lasting 4-5 hours daily. They also pointed out the technical challenges with the power grid, which reportedly takes more than two hours to recharge after disruptions. They also raised the issue of shortage of technical staff at Bambooflat power house and requested for posting of permanent JE to resolve the issue immediately.

Port Blair, May 12: International Nurses Day was celebrated in a befitting manner today, in the Lecture Hall-II of ANIIMS by the entire nursing fraternity of GB Pant Hospital alongwith School of Nursing and ANM Training School. The theme for this year’s Nurses Day celebration was ‘Our Nurses, Our Future: The Economic Power of Care’. Dr. Suja Anthony, Director of Health Services was the chief guest. Dr. Arpita Saha, Additional MS, GBPH and Dr. Shiny Varghese, Principal, School of Nursing were the guests of honor.
