MP Bishnu Pada Ray Urges Early Resolution of Compensation for Tsunami-affected Farmers

Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb 1: Shri Bishnu Pada Ray, Hon’ble Member of Parliament from Andaman & Nicobar Islands, has urged the Hon’ble Union Home Minister, Shri Amit Shah, to intervene for the early resolution of the long-pending grievances of farmers whose lands were submerged into the sea during the devastating Tsunami of 2004.

The Hon’ble MP stated that the affected farmers have been waiting for justice and compensation for more than two decades, causing them immense hardship and distress. He emphasized that despite repeated representations and genuine demands of the affected families, the issue remains unresolved.

Shri Bishnu Pada Ray recalled that he had earlier taken up the matter with the Government of India and requested consideration of the recommendations of the Vivek Rai Committee, submitted in 2018, after consultations with the affected farmers. He had also formally raised the issue through his letter dated 12 February 2025.

Expressing deep concern over the continued delay, the Hon’ble MP said that even after more than a year, no concrete steps have been taken to address the issue. As a result, the affected farmers are repeatedly approaching him, seeking urgent intervention for justice.

The Hon’ble MP has earnestly requested the Union Home Minister to direct the concerned authorities to initiate the necessary process and take a positive and time-bound decision so that long-suffering Tsunami-affected farmers may finally receive due compensation.

Shri Bishnu Pada Ray reiterated his commitment to continue pursuing the matter until justice is delivered to the affected farmers.
