
Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 8: On September 8, 2025, a total of 145 students from Govt. Sr. Secondary School, South Point, Sri Vijaya Puram, accompanied by eight teachers, visited on a study trip to the Garacharma Research Complex of ICAR-CIARI, Sri Vijaya Puram. The purpose of this visit was to gain insights into the latest research and advancements in agriculture and related sectors. Shri Chittaranjan Raul, a Scientist, presented an overview of the Freshwater Ornamental Fish Culture Unit at Garacharma, which features breeding and rearing facilities for aquarium fishes, including Guppy, Molly. Furthermore, he elaborated on how ICAR-CIARI offers comprehensive packages of practices aimed at production for the farmers of the Islands.
Dr. Prabhu P, a Scientist, outlined the salt-tolerant rice varieties and he provided insights on how to assess the disease resistance of the rice variety. Shri. Kishore Tete, a Technical Officer, introduced the Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Medicinal Garden, which showcases a wide variety of therapeutic plants designed to enhance awareness of the region’s biodiversity.
Shri D. Karunakaran, a scientist, greeted the group and provided an overview of India’s agricultural advancements since Independence, highlighting several pivotal “revolutions” such as the Green, White, Blue, Yellow, Golden, Silver, and Pink Revolutions that have significantly transformed the sector and secured food availability for the country. He also discussed career opportunities available after pursuing studies in Agriculture, Fisheries, and Animal Husbandry. The visit was organized by Shri D. Karunakaran, Scientist, Smt. Asma Bibi, Senior Technical Assistant, Shri Ali Akbar, Technician, and Mr. C. P. Vijayan, Young Professional-1, Agricultural Knowledge Management Unit, under the leadership of Dr. Eaknath B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair.
