Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb. 6: The Department of Tourism, A&N Islands, in association with Kalapani Phaag Mandali, has invited the general public and tourists to experience Phaag, a rare and vibrant folk musical tradition deeply rooted in the cultural history of the islands tomorrow (Feb. 7) at Marina Esplanade from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm. Phaag is a traditional form of folk songs brought to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands prior to the year 1900 and is closely associated with the festive period from Vasant Panchami to Holi (Phagun Mahina).
These songs reflect the rich social and cultural fabric of the islands and have been an integral part of community celebrations in the past. The event reflects Andaman’s composite cultural heritage and aims to revive and preserve a rare folk tradition that is now gradually fading, while offering both residents and tourists an authentic glimpse into the islands’ living cultural legacy. The public has been cordially invited to be a part of this cultural celebration and witness the soulful melodies that echo the timeless traditions of the islands.
