Training Programme on Induced / Spray-Based Harvesting Techniques of Clove Demonstrated Under SPICE PRAVAH Initiative

Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan. 21: Under SPICE PRAVAH initiative, to create awareness among clove growers on scientific methods for reducing labour dependency and improving harvesting efficiency, a training programme on induced/spray-based harvesting techniques of clove in collaboration with ICAR-IISR was successfully demonstrated at Organic Horticulture Farm (OHF), Sippighat and in the  farmers field of Shri A. Muniyaswamy, R/o New Bimblitan, with the technical support of  Dr. Anees K, Principal  Scientist from the Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR), Kozhikode on 20.01.2026.

During the programme, scientist from ICAR- IISR, Kozhikode explained that Clove (Syzygium aromaticum), a high-value spice crop harvested for its aromatic unopened flower buds, is traditionally hand-picked at a specific maturity stage to ensure quality and market value. This manual process is labor-intensive and risky, especially when trees are tall. The expert highlighted that induced harvesting helps synchronize bud maturity, reduce harvesting time, minimize drudgery and lower labour costs, particularly in tall and densely grown clove plantations.

Spice-growing farmers from nearby villages attended the training programme. Officers and staff of the Department were also present during the programme. Farmers actively participated in the interactive sessions and expressed keen interest in adopting the technology after observing the demonstrations. The programme also provided an opportunity for farmers to directly interact with scientists and clarify their doubts related to Clove crop management and harvesting practices. Altogether 50 participants attended the programme.
