12th International Day of Yoga Observed at 5 Locations in the Nicobar District 

Car Nicobar, June 21: The 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 was celebrated at 5 locations across Nicobar District with great enthusiasm and active participation under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, along with the rest of the country. The celebration aimed to promote the importance of Yoga as a means to achieve physical well-being, mental harmony, and a healthy lifestyle.

The district-level Mass Yoga Demonstration was organized at Malacca Jetty, Car Nicobar. The programme was graced by Shri L. Rahul Nair, Superintendent of Police, Nicobar District, as the chief guest. Dr. Navin Kumar, Assistant Commissioner (HQ); Dr. Grace, Vice Chairperson / MS-BJRH; Heads of Departments, senior officers and staff members; Tribal Council members; Village Captains; and members of the local community actively participated in the event.

The Yoga session was conducted by trained Yoga instructors, wherein participants performed various Yoga Asanas and breathing exercises with great enthusiasm and dedication.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Navin Kumar, AC emphasized the importance of incorporating Yoga into daily life and highlighted its significant role in yoga in slowing ageing and reducing stress, preventing lifestyle-related diseases, and promoting a healthy and balanced lifestyle among all sections of society.

Similar Yoga Sangam programmes were successfully conducted at Nancowry, Campbell Bay, Katchal & Teressa under the supervision of the respective Assistant Commissioners and Medical Officer Incharge.

The celebration witnessed enthusiastic participation of 205 people from Car Nicobar, 450 from Nancowrie, 69 from Teressa, 90 from Katchal, and 150 from Campbell Bay. The participants included officials and staff from Government Departments, health institutions, local communities, and villagers, reflecting the collective commitment towards making Yoga an integral part of daily life and promoting a healthier society.

Further, to sustain the practice of Yoga beyond the celebration, BJR Hospital has initiated daily Yoga classes from 1st July 2026 for the general public, encouraging regular participation and promoting overall health and well-being among the people.

The programme commenced with the welcome address delivered by Dr. Md. Shafique, MO (Homoeo), BJR Hospital.
