
Sri Vijaya Puram, June 24: 23rd June has been declared as International Olympic Day and is celebrated worldwide to commemorate the founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894. In line with this global tradition, the 1st International Olympic Day was celebrated on 23rd June, 2025 with great enthusiasm and active participation across schools in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The celebration was coordinated under the guidance of the Sports Section, Directorate of Education, Sri Vijaya Puram, which played a pivotal role in motivating schools to mark the occasion in a meaningful and impactful manner, thereby strengthening the sporting culture at the grassroots level.
The primary objective of the celebration was to promote the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship, and Respect among students, while also encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle through sports and physical education.
To commemorate this occasion, a variety of activities were organized in schools, including awareness sessions on the history and significance of the Olympic movement, drawing contests, and various sports competitions.
Students participated enthusiastically in athletics, football, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, chess, and other events, showcasing their talent, discipline, and sportsmanship. The spirit of fair play and teamwork was evident throughout.
In addition to sports activities, quiz competitions focused on the history of the Olympic Games and legendary athletes were conducted. These engaging activities sparked curiosity and deepened students’ understanding of global sports culture and the Olympic spirit.
The International Olympic Day celebrations served as a vibrant platform for students to engage in healthy and purposeful competition, fostering unity, discipline, and a sense of national pride. Schools ensured inclusive participation, making the event a memorable and inspiring experience for all involved.
Under the guidance of the Director (Education), the Sports Section of the Education Department, A & N Administration, played a significant role in facilitating and promoting these celebrations, reaffirming its commitment to holistic education and the overall development of school students through sports & games.
