
Sri Vijaya Puram, April 22: The Department of Science and Technology (DST), A&N Administration, marked Earth Day 2026 with a series of vibrant and educational activities aimed at fostering environmental awareness among school students and the wider community. As part of the celebrations, a painting competition on the theme “Our Power, Our Planet” was conducted recently at the Science & Technology Awareness Hub for students of Classes VI to VIII. Participants expressed their creativity through art works highlighting environmental and scientific themes.
The winners of the competition are First Prize (Rs. 2000): Kumari K. Srinidhi (Class VI), VKV Senior Secondary School, Lamba Line; Second Prize (Rs.1500):Kumari J.P. Riddhishaa (Class VI), VKV Senior Secondary School, Lamba Line; Third Prize (Rs.1000):Kumari P. Anshika (Class VIII), GSSS Bathubasti and Consolation Prize (Rs.750): Kumar Sanjoy Mistri (Class VI), GSSS School Line.
A Nature Trekking programme was organized on April 17 at Chidiyatapu, involving students and teachers of GSSS Bathubasti. Guided by Dr. B. Sumit Kumar Rao, Entomologist (NVBDCP), and other experts, students explored the region’s rich biodiversity. The trek included bird watching at Bada Balu area, offering hands-on learning about local flora and ecological conservation.
On April 18, DST staff conducted a beach cleaning drive at Corbyn’s Cove Beach. The celebrations culminated today with a tree plantation drive at the DST campus in Dollygunj. The Secretary of Science & Technology inaugurated the programme by planting saplings. In his address, the chief guest highlighted the importance of environmental protection and sustainable living, urging collective responsibility toward preserving the planet: Mother Earth.
Students of ITI, along with competition winners and DST staff, participated enthusiastically. A total of 50 saplings were planted within the campus. Prizes were also distributed to the painting competition winners during the event.
