
Sri Vijaya Puram, April 30: In a landmark initiative poised to place the Andaman & Nicobar Islands firmly on the global adventure tourism map, the Andaman & Nicobar Administration will attempt two prestigious Guinness World Records titles on May 2 and 3, 2026. Designed to spotlight the islands’ exceptional underwater wealth and position them as a premier international diving destination, the twin record attempts are expected to draw widespread global attention while underscoring the region’s growing stature in marine and eco-tourism.
The proposed record attempts are:
“Largest Flag Unfurled Underwater” – scheduled for May 2, 2026. The proposed flag, measuring 60m in length and 40m in breadth (total 2,400 sq. m), will be unfurled at Radhanagar Beach.
“Tallest Human Stack Underwater” – scheduled for May 3, 2026. The attempt will take place near the Lighthouse at Swaraj Dweep Jetty, aiming for a minimum height of 20 metres.
Admiral D K Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd), Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor, Andaman & Nicobar Islands & Vice-Chairman, Islands Development Agency will grace the occasion and participate in both the record attempts.
These unique underwater feats will bring together trained divers, support personnel, and technical experts to ensure strict adherence to international safety protocols and Guinness World Records guidelines. The event aims to showcase the region’s unparalleled marine biodiversity, crystal-clear waters, and immense potential for adventure tourism, particularly scuba diving. By leveraging such high-visibility global platforms, the Administration seeks to reinforce the islands’ reputation as a world-class destination for underwater exploration and eco-tourism.
Key objectives of the initiative include promoting the islands as a leading global hub for scuba diving and marine tourism, highlighting the fragile yet vibrant underwater ecosystem, encouraging sustainable and responsible tourism practices, and attracting international divers, adventure enthusiasts, and travellers.
