
Sri Vijaya Puram, June 7: A Tree Plantation Drive was successfully organized at Unity Park, Bathu Basti on the occasion of World Environment Day, with the active participation of approximately 50 volunteers, government officials, environmental enthusiasts, and members of civil society.
The programme was organized by Andaman Nomads Club in collaboration with the Andaman & Nicobar Forest Department under the theme “A Step Towards a Greener Andaman.” The initiative aimed to promote environmental awareness, increase green cover, and encourage community participation in conservation efforts.
The programme was graced by Shri V. Vetri Vel, Senior Vice Chairperson, Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council (SVPMC), who participated in the plantation drive along with senior officials of the Andaman & Nicobar Forest Department. Their presence underscored the importance of collaborative efforts between government agencies, local bodies, and community organizations in promoting environmental conservation and sustainable development across the islands.
The plantation drive commenced at 9:00 AM and witnessed enthusiastic participation from members of the organizing team, officials of the Forest Department, local residents, and volunteers. Saplings were planted across designated areas of Unity Park with a collective pledge to nurture and protect them for the future.
The organizers highlighted the message “One Sapling, One Promise, One Greener Island”, emphasizing that every tree planted today contributes towards a healthier and more sustainable tomorrow for the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
The event received valuable support from Dreamz Nirvana Trust and Organization For South & South East Asia Development (OFSSEAD), whose representatives also joined the plantation activities and reaffirmed their commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development.
Officials of the Forest Department appreciated the efforts of Andaman Nomads Club and all volunteers for taking proactive steps towards environmental conservation. Participants were encouraged to continue such initiatives and inspire others to adopt eco-friendly practices in their daily lives.
