KVK Nicobar Conducts Awareness Programme on Importance and Use of Green Leaf Manure for Improving Soil Fertility at Munak Village, Nancowry

Nancowry, June 19: An awareness programme on “Importance and Use of Green Leaf Manure for Improving Soil Fertility” was conducted under the Khet Bachao Abhiyan at Munak Village, Nancowry by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Nicobar in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture. A total of 30 farmers and farm women actively participated in the programme.

During the programme, farmers were sensitized about the importance of green leaf manure in improving soil fertility, enhancing soil organic matter, increasing microbial activity, and improving moisture retention capacity. The SMS of ICAR-KVK CIARI Nicobar elaborated on the importance and use of green leaf manure for improving soil fertility and sustaining agricultural productivity. The incorporation of green leaf manure enriches the soil with organic matter, enhances nutrient availability, improves soil structure, and promotes beneficial microbial activity.

The SMS also highlighted the role of green leaf manure in improving moisture retention, reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers, and maintaining long-term soil health. Farmers were informed about locally available green leaf sources and their proper application methods for achieving better crop growth and yield. An interactive discussion session was held where farmers shared their experiences and raised queries related to soil health management and organic farming practices. The queries were addressed by the experts with suitable recommendations for local farming conditions. The participants appreciated the programme and expressed their willingness to adopt green leaf manuring practices in their farms for improving soil health and crop productivity.

The same awareness programme was also conducted at Campbell Bay, Great Nicobar, to create awareness among farmers regarding sustainable soil fertility management through the use of green leaf manure. The programme is being co-ordinated by Dr. Santosh Kumar, Head, ICAR-KVK CIARI Nicobar, under the guidance of Dr. Jai Sunder, Director, ICAR-CIARI, Sri Vijayapuram. Through the Khet Bachao Abhiyan, ICAR-KVK Nicobar continues to strengthen farmers’ knowledge on eco-friendly soil management practices for improving crop productivity and resilience in the Nicobar Islands.
