Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug. 3: The Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS) has started Infertility Camps for bovines across the Islands from 1st August, 2026 as per the pre-drawn schedule. The camps aim at improving reproductive health, enhancing conception rates and supporting dairy development through scientific interventions.
An Infertility Camp was conducted at Rabindra Nagar Panchayat on Aug. 1. A total of 35 animals were examined clinically. Out of the animals examined, 10 were found pregnant, 20 were dewormed (including lactating animals and a few heifers of 2-3 years age), one animal in heat was artificially inseminated, and four animals were in the 30-day post-partum stage. Medicines such as Hepacin powder, Mineral Mixture, Rafoxanide, Oxyclozanide + Levamisole, Albendazole, Tonophosphan injection and Multivitamin injection were supplied. In addition, 30 kg of Sorghum (MP Chari) fodder seeds were distributed to six farmers at the rate of 5 kg each for one bigha area.
Another Infertility Camp was organised at New Bimblitan village under Gram Panchayat Sippighat by the Senior Veterinary Officer, Veterinary Hospital Garacharma and team along with Dr. Perumal, Senior Scientist, CIARI. A total of 17 animals were examined. Three repeat breeding cases, one case of silent heat with underdeveloped genitalia and one silent heat case were detected. The repeat breeders were treated with Ivermectin, Tonophosphan and Cyclomin. To improve the success of Artificial Insemination, six scrub bulls were castrated. Deworming was carried out on 27 cattle and 28 goats, while anti-tick medication was administered to four cattle. Livestock owners were also briefed about the benefits of Sex Sorted Semen (SSS).
An Infertility Camp was also conducted at Lall Pahar, Portmout, where 10 animals were examined. The findings revealed two pregnant animals, two animals in heat, two in anestrus and four completely normal animals. The two animals in heat and four with normal oestrus cycles were selected for the 5th round of Embryo Transfer Technology (ETT). Deworming tablets and mineral mixture were provided to the selected animals.
These camps form part of the Department’s continuous efforts to address infertility issues in bovines, promote scientific breeding practices and improve livestock productivity in the Islands.
