ICAR-CIARI and ICAR-KVK, South Andaman Jointly Organise Training Programme on Pig Farming at ICAR-KVK, Sippighat

Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug 20: A training programme was organized by ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Port Blair at ICAR-KVK, Sippighat (South Andaman) from 18-20 Aug., 2026 in collaboration with ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kenda, South Andaman. The theme of the trainings was “Information and awareness on scientific pig rearing practices” and 25 participants attended the training. On the the occasion was graced by the Chief guest of the programme Dr. Y. Ramakrishna, PS & Head, KVK, South Andaman, who presided the session and he was very instrumental in briefing the ways and means for profitable pig rearing. At outset ice breaking & sensitization was meticulously performed by Dr. Zachariah George (SMS), further he tried the best to delineate the prevailing situation and deterrents of piggery industry of the islands and addressed the solutions intricately. Dr. P.A. Bala, Principal Scientist and PI, AICRP Pig elucidated skilfully the Feeding system, schedule and balanced feeding concept intricately. The first day of training culminated with thanking the chair.

Dr. P. Perumal, Sr. Scientist masterfully delineated the Reproductive management of swine for profitable venture. Dr. R.R. Alyethodi, Senior Scientist intricately explained the Breeding and genetic selection strategies and benefit of superior germplasms. Mr. Brigson, Financial Adviser, SBI, was very pivotal in disseminating knowledge on various financial and welfare schemes for the farmers, and was instrumental to enlighten the pig farmers with Kisan credit card. Mr. Mohit, Subject Matter Specialist very elaborated the integration of piggery in IFS model, its components and strategy to implement in the islands.

The participants were guided to Piggery unit of DAHVS, Dollygung.  Dr. Subhash Palve, SVO and I/c pig unit along with his team distinctly explicated about the piggery unit, fodders, Azolla culturing, chaff cutting of the fodder, and hydroponic system. At piggery unit, ASD, ICAR-CIARI, Dr. Bala affluently explained the daily chores of the unit, while Mr. Kartick, Mr. Abhishek Desai and Mr. Vinod elucidated and demonstrated Iron therapy module for piglets, piglet selection and explained about docking and needle tooth removal.  The training culminated with deliberation of Dr. Y. Ramakrishna (PS and Head KVK, South Andaman) on ways to use local resources and curbing the feed scarcity in islands to amplify profit in livestock farming.
